Visual Spatial Mathlympics

The Visual-Spatial Mathlympics, organized by ‘Learner’s Connections’, is a unique competition designed for Primary 6 students. It combines intricate challenges that involve both visual-spatial intelligence and mathematical skills.

The competition is valuable for many students who are aiming to enter secondary schools through the Direct School Admission (DSA). Participating in the Visual-Spatial Mathlympics 2023 not only offers these students an engaging academic challenge but also enhances their academic portfolios. This advantage is particularly beneficial for those considering applications to institutions that emphasize Mathematics, Science, or Art.

Objective: Visual Spatial Mathlympics

The primary objective of the Visual Spatial Mathlympics is to develop a group of students who possess a strong proficiency in visualizing and comprehending spatial concepts. By promoting advanced spatial reasoning skills, this programme aims to prepare students to approach and solve complicated problems that require spatial thinking.

Who is it for?

This program is for Students who are in the 6th grade or below and attend a specific primary school in 2023.

How can you participate?

Visual Spatial Mathlympics is a school-based competition, so you’ll need to sign up through your school – no independent registrations allowed.

Categories

The Visual Spatial Mathlympics include challenges in 2D and 3D fractions, percentages, and ratios; area, perimeter, and volume calculations; 2D and 3D perspectives; symmetry and rotation of 2D figures and 3D solids; nets construction; area and perimeter of circles computations; angle properties within circles; measures and measurements using different units; and rate and speed analysis.

Competition format  

Calculators may NOT be used. Only right answers will be marked. No marks will be deducted for incorrect or unattempted responses. All organizer and judge decisions are final.

Duration: 1.5 hours 

Section A: (5 MCQ questions of 2 marks each)

Section B: (5 open-ended questions of 3 marks each)

Section C: (5 open-ended questions of 4 marks each)

Section D: (5 open-ended questions of 5 marks each)

Section E: (5 open-ended questions of 6 marks each)

Syllabus/ Subject Matter Focus

Visual Spatial Mathlympics incorporates various mathematical subjects. Following are the topics covered in this competition. 

  • Fractions, Percentage, Ratio in 2D figures, 3D solids

  • Area, Perimeter and Volume

  • 2D & 3D Perspectives

  • Symmetry, Rotation of 2D figures and 3D solids

  • Nets

  • Area, Perimeter of Circles

  • Angles Properties (including Circles)

  • Measures and Measurement

  • Rate and Speed

Registration and time lines : Visual Spatial Mathlympics 2023

Students should register themselves via their respective schools. 

Test

The test is held on 18 April 2023. 

Results

The Results are held in 31 July 2023.

Prize and Award Recognition

The top 3 participants will receive individual prizes.

Individual Awards
PrizeReceiver
Gold AwardMedals and Certificates will be awarded to the top 5% of the participants.
Gold Distinction AwardMedals and Certificates will be awarded to the top 10 participants amongst the Gold Award winners.
Silver AwardMedals and Certificates will be awarded to the next 7.5% of the participants.
Bronze AwardMedals and Certificates will be awarded to the next 12.5% of the participants.
Certificates of ParticipationWill be awarded to all the remaining participants.

In recognition of the dedication and support provided to their students, schools participating in the competition will be awarded trophies and cash prizes based on their achievements in Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards, as well as their overall medal counts.

1st Runner-UpCash prize and 1 trophy for the school
2nd Runner-UpCash prize and 1 trophy for the school
School DistinctionThe top school (excluding Champion and Runner-Up schools) with highest medal count will receive a School Distinction Trophy.

Each of the top three schools (excluding the Champion and Runner-Up schools) with the most total medals will be honored with a School Distinction Trophy.

The Champion School will keep the Challenge Trophy and return it to Learners’ Connections Pte Ltd for the next competition. The Challenge Trophy will be kept forever by the school that wins it three years in a row.
