The Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS), formarly knowns as SMOPS organized by Hwa Chong Institution, is an annual event dedicated to fostering a deeper passion for mathematics among primary school students and enhancing their problem-solving abilities.
The inaugural Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary School (SMOPS) was successfully launched in 1990.
In 1993, Zi Qiang Investments Limited made a generous contribution by establishing the Kong Chian Challenge Trophy in memory of the late Dato Lee Kong Chian, who served as the Chairman of the Board of Management, as a mentor, and as a benefactor.
In 2002, SMOPS underwent a transformation, becoming APMOPS, with the inclusion of participation from overseas centers in Asia-Pacific countries.
Subsequently, APMOPS adopted a two-round competition format. The first round takes place in local schools and overseas centers in early April. Top performers from both local and overseas centers in the first round receive invitations to participate in the Invitation Round of APMOPS, held during the final week of the first semester of the school term in Singapore, where they compete for the top positions.
