FAQ
1.My First English Class (2.5 years and up)
Children from two-and-a-half thrive in a
comfortable and conducive learning environment. The important thing at this age
is that your child is able to concentrate when something has grabbed his or her
attention. It is also a time where the child is likely to be chatty, to mimic
and to express him or herself. As such,
your child will try to construct simple sentences and attempt to grasp grammar
concepts.
My First English Class is a set of
English lessons designed for kids in this age group to help initiate their
ability to express themselves.
In My First English Class, your child
will enjoy interacting with other children while working to improve his or her
oral language skills through our individualized, structured programme.
Our activity-based programme will be
presented with age-appropriate challenges and learning opportunities. These
activities include “Show-&-Tell”, “Letter Games”, the singing of nursery
rhymes and story time.
Structured
English classes for children
Children in My First English Class learn
to enjoy books as the teacher engages them in active listening and looking
during story time. They improve their fine motor control through simple
classroom-based activities. They learn intonation, rhythm, pronunciation, and
articulation through songs and rhymes. In My First English Class, we also teach
kids to confidently address a group aloud. They build stronger vocabularies
using pictures of animals, objects and people.
At two-and-a-half or three years old,
your child is ready to make friends and play cooperatively with other children
in My First English Class. He or she will learn to interact with classmates and
teachers politely, confidently and cheerfully through exchanging greetings and
responding appropriately to questions and instructions.
Our experienced teachers are ready to
stimulate, reward, and support your child embarking on a literacy journey.

2.My English Foundation Class
By now, the speech and language
development of the child has progressed. Children three and up can receive
instructions well and are ready to take on more responsibility. Learning to
read is a continuous and gradual process that starts early on, when your child
first makes connections between the words he or she hears you read and the
marks and symbols on a printed page.
In My English Foundation Class, your
child will gain the skills needed to progress to a complete phonics program
while building expressive, listening, and social skills.
In this class, there is a stronger focus
on each child’s individual articulation. The goal is for the child to become
familiar with the entire possible range of English sounds in isolation and in
combination with other word sounds. Each child must learn how to distinguish
and reproduce initial consonant and vowel sounds of words for a comprehensive selection
of objects and people.
The dual challenge is to communicate the
concept of a single isolated sound to the child and to teach the child to
produce the full range of sounds accurately. Children develop the ability to
form the correct responses to prompts for the initial sounds of words at
different rates, so our teachers tailor the phonics awareness portions of the
lessons to each child’s needs.
Class time also includes story time and
fine motor activities. Children continue to build presentation skills and
vocabulary.
Our experienced teachers know how to
instill the concepts and behaviours needed to help your child progress smoothly
towards the reading program, regardless of age.

3.My Reading Class (English reading lessons)
In My Reading Class, your child will
progress steadily through a series of English reading lessons that will give
him or her the ability to decode the printed letters that make up any written
word in English, whether or not he or she has ever seen the word before, independent
of meaning or context.
The programme introduces the sounds of
English in a logical sequence that constantly builds the child’s cumulative
knowledge of how to attack written words.
English reading lessons written with
specially limited vocabularies eliminate distraction and incorporate sight words
gradually so that phonetic methods of sounding out words are always emphasized.
Memorization of individual words is a necessity, but in accordance with our
method, does not become the child’s primary method.
English
reading class
Children learn to systematically
associate the sounds of English with their common spelling patterns to write
words correctly.
Children will be constantly exposed to
new vocabulary using engaging methods. They will be expected to recognize some
words on sight.
Children become responsible for their
learning not only through doing homework and reading practice at home, but also
by completing spelling tests successfully.
Explicit teaching, one-on-one guided
reading practice, and group reading practice are conducted in a way that is
relevant and engaging, in an environment geared towards the focus on engagement
with the printed text and writing materials.
Children are gradually introduced to
basic grammar, capitalization and punctuation conventions, that are key to
reading and understanding written sentences, paragraphs, dialogues and stories.
As students become more fluent readers,
teachers will spend less time focusing on decoding skills and more time on
reading comprehension and grammar, and will expect students to complete writing
activities using correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling.

5.My Reading Readiness Class
In My Reading Readiness Class, your child
will gain the advanced phonics manipulation skills needed to progress to the
reading class while building oral fluency, listening and comprehension skills.
Lively oral activities will engage
children’s minds in the challenge of detecting English sounds in combination.
Exciting games and rewards motivate students to learn how to make words by
hearing the component sounds spoken separately.
Children gain the critical mental key to
understanding the functioning of the alphabet. They gain not only the ability
to recognize and produce the symbols that represent the English language, but
the realization that the letters are used to represent the sounds they hear —
in a way that is fundamentally, if not always actually, logical and
predictable.
Children continue to build vocabulary
through repeated exposure to the phonics practice words. Homework activities
engage students’ visual, creative, and fine motor skills in support of the
programme goals.
All classroom and homework activities are
practical preparation for reading with an eye to recognition of sound patterns
and combinations.
Oral fluency skills are developed more
fully at this level as students are expected to be more independent and
confident in their oral presentations.
Story time engages children’s
imaginations and critical thinking skills, as they consume and react to the
people, animals, and situations described and depicted in the story. They learn
to answer questions about how the story might end, or how the characters are
feeling as the events unfold.
Our experienced teachers know how to
introduce the oral skills in increasing difficulty while involving students at
multiple levels to ensure that each child happily progresses at his or her own
rate towards the reading programme, regardless of age.
