If your child is in a local school in Singapore, they will be required to learn either Chinese / Tamil / Malay as part of the Ministry of Education’s Mother Tongue Language Policy. This can be a big challenge if it’s not their native language or if they have spent time living abroad and not maintained their language studies.
Achieving a low grade in mother tongue at school can negatively impact your child’s Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) score, which in turn may limit their choice of secondary school. However fortunately there is a solution.
For students who have obtained approval from the Ministry of Education (MOE) may be offered French in lieu of MTL. They are either students who join the school system mid-stream from non-MTL speaking countries, or students with at least one parent who is foreign born and of non-Chinese/Malay/Indian ethnicity
Students can contact MOE to find out whether they are eligible to take French in lieu of mother tongue.
